The occurrence of swollen gums are included in the class of dental problems referred to as gum disease. Any disorder of the gums or the soft, bony tissues that surrounds the teeth is known as gum disease, which is the most common infection in America, next to the common heat cold. Swollen gums occurs in the first stage of gum disease which can definitely lead to loss of teeth, and the incidence of gum disease increases as people age. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis or the inflammation of the gums. The sticky plaque is a composition of bacteria, mucus and rotting food debris or food particles that covers the tooth, which eventually settles down at the base of the tooth. The start of swollen gums is due to the build up of dental plaque on teeth.
